Winter Holiday: Les Deux Alpes, France

After thoroughly enjoying my first skiing holiday last year, I jumped at the chance of  being invited on a weeks skiing at the beginning of the new year and it did definitely not disappoint! Once again I was blown away by the beautiful mountains, the calming white landscape, the quiet and the freshest of air.

As a high altitude resort and with the largest skiable glacier in Europe, Les Deux Alpes I could see why this destination is a firm favourite for British visitors.

We had the perfect weather for our trip, everyday was crisp and sunny making it the best conditions to explore the vast mountainous range. Plus being only 1 hour and 30 mins transfer from Grenoble airport it was an easy spot to access and an ideal location to spend time having fun and relaxing. On top of that, its a great destination to visit if you’re an avid skier or boarder as you’re 100% guaranteed snow.

If you are looking for one of the best snow destinations in Europe for your next winter holiday, then this is the place to go. Below I will link you everything we did, places you can eat and where we stayed.

Master Pizza – Best takeaway in town

Le Vetrata – Delicious Italian food

La Porte d’à Coté‘ – Owned by the chalet owners. Book through them & you might just get some discount!

Panobar – Ultimate après ski bar. Just be careful about how many you knock back though as the route back down the mountain is very LONG!

Chalet de la Toura Restaurant – Great spot to use as a meeting point for lunch if you’re in a big group and you’ve all split up for the morning. Located at the mid point on the mountain by the gondola.

Le Diable au Coeur Restaurant – Incredible panoramic views of the mountains

Polar Bear Pub – A traditional and cosy chalet style pub right in the heart of town.

As we went as a group of 13 we stayed in a self-catered chalet, Chalet Le Hibou. The chalet was modern, really clean and cosy and provided us with the essentials to enjoy our stay. It does have the option of being catered but being a large group of young people we preferred the option of eating out and exploring the town during the evenings. Plus it was a little out of our budget. Find the link to our chalet here

There is a wide choice of accommodation located within the heart of the town and something to suit everyone’s requirements. Whether you’re looking for a hotel, an apartment, a chalet or a hostel you’ll find each space has easy and quick access to the slopes and are a few minutes walk from local amenities.

Paragliding – This one was a little spontaneous. During the week I kept seeing ski paragliders flying through the sky and smoothly coming into land at the bottom of the slopes. Being the adrenaline junkie that I am, I instantly became obsessed and wanted to try it out for myself. So as a little birthday treat I soon got it booked (80 euros) after I saw a sign by Le Diable chairlift, and the following day I was skiing straight off a mountain top, strapped to a guide and blissfully flying between the mountains. If this is something you’d like to try I highly recommend, it was incredible! I’ve done several airborne adventures but this was just so surreal. It was so calm and peaceful and the views were breathtaking.  Click here for further info.

Sledging – Whether you’re a non-skier or looking to take an afternoon break from the slopes why not grab a sledge and head to one of the tobogganing areas. You may find where you’re staying provides a sledge you can use.

Ice rink – The outdoor ice rink is located in the heart of Les Deux Alpes and is the perfect way to escape the slopes and have a little more fun. With a one day or more ski pass entry is free otherwise, adults: €8.50, children 5-12 years and seniors: €6, and renting skates: €5 per adult and €3.60 per children or senior.

Snow Park – Located on the La Toura sector Freestyle Land offers a new experience to snowboarding and skiing. Separated into different levels the park has something for riders of all levels including: bordercross, rails, jumps, slopes and springboards.

There’s nothing quite like a good blue run to build your confidence, warm up your legs or just cruise along and enjoy the scenery. In my opinion the Jandri run had to be one of the best ski runs in the resort as you could ski non-stop from the top of the glacier straight into the village. Despite it’s precarious icy patches and the intense leg burn it always was an exciting ride home, especially after a visit to Panobar!

I hope you enjoyed my Les Deux Alpes snow content.

Love, AR
